Cross-Party Progress!

The new council is already showing unusual, and welcome signs of cross-party co-operation. Long may it last.

The 'Statement' setting out the basis of the other groups support for a minority Lib Dem administration is set out here. It's good to see at least three items that were put forward by the new Green Group.

I'm glad to see that there are some very sensible transport proposals in that document, particularly investigating a transport interchange at Temple Meads and doing more with Bristol's woefully under-utilised rail network.

Let us not forget that these people are politicians and these promises are therefore politician's promises.

I don't believe that the labs, libs or cons are remotely interested in any of these issues and they would happily switch sides at a moment's notice - especially if some commercial interest became involved.

On the face of it, the agreement's probably as good as we could hope for, but in practice of course it could fall apart. I can imagine (say) the commitment to a Plot 6 hub collapsing if a developer comes along and promises an Arena, conditional on building commercially on the rest of the Temple Meads sites.

On green spaces, Gary Hopkins was as bullish as ever on radio this morning... you'd think everything was exactly as it was a month ago. He finds it very hard to listen, let alone actually compromise, and you have to wonder if his LibDem colleagues will continue to back him if he digs his heels in

My spies tell me that Janke is not a great fan of Hopkins and that she's hoping he'll make a proper balls-up of the parks brief

The reality is that all the Lib Dems talk about Gary behind his back, but he is still there in the cabinet. Likewise they all say what a good guy Mark Wright is yet he is kicked off the cabinet.

What's Gary got that Mark hasn't then eh?

Its good to have a thick skinned bullish figure stomping around. Mark can't compete for the Prescott clone.
Gary needs to drop the green-space flogging crusade though before he gets dumped.
